Futuraskolan International Pre-School
|
Wonderful changes in the hands of the new principal. Review - September 2015
This paricular Futuraskolan pre-school is international and many of the staff are native English-speakers. The school follows the Swedish pre-school curriculum but also takes aspects from the International Primary Curriculum's early years programme. This is most relevant for children who go on to one of the international schools and means that there is the option to either move to the British International School of Stockholm, almost next door, at age 3 or stay at Futuraskolan up to age 5.
I spoke with some parents a few years ago who were unhappy with aspects of Futuraskolan in Djursholm. I remember comments such as 'odd timings for meals and naps' and 'too many changes' as well as 'not taking parents' comments into account'. I was very pleased to hear from one of those parents that things have changed. Here is what she told me in September 2015:
A new principal took over at the Djursholm branch of Futuraskolan one year ago. She was already (and still is) the head of the International pre-school in nearby Täby and she has made a number of changes since she arrived here in Danderyd. It feels like she changed everything from the place itself to the teachers and the structure of each day!
Communication between the staff and parents has dramatically improved, including a daily newsletter that tells parents what has happened throughout the day - particularly useful for the littlest ones' parents. There is also a weekly newsletter and all the children have their own portfolios. Parents feel listened to and problems are discussed, sometimes explanations come via email to all parents.
The site itself has been reorganised. Previously, one building housed the younger children and the other the older ones. Now the children can move between the two houses and the rooms are being transformed, such as the second kitchen into a science room. There is now a separate dedicated library too. There is even a plan for a dance floor in the basement!
Learning now includes the teaching of reading using the British Jolly Phonics system from age 4.
