Brownies have operated in the UK for 100 years this year and to celebrate with 1st Djursholm Brownies, a very special guest arrived from Britain - Lesley Knighton MBE, the Commissioner for British Guides in Foreign Countries. Here are some photos from the celebrations!
Our local Brownie group, 1st Djursholm Brownies, is the only Brownie group in Sweden and they celebrated their 10 year anniversary last week with a big party. Brownies are a group of girl scouts and the girls work towards all sorts of goals, such as 'taking care of a neighbour' and 'raising money for charity' and, when they achieve a goal, they get a fabric badge that they can wear to each meeting. After living in Athens for two years, I was pleased to discover Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren in downtown Danderyd. Located in the heart of the town center, off Djursholmsvägen, the restaurant/catering business is exactly what you’d expect from your local Greek Taverna. With traditional favorites on the menu, like moussaka, dolmades and tzatziki, plus vegetarian dishes, there is something for everyone.
Open 11:00 to 21:00 Monday-Friday and 12:00 to 21:00 on weekends, chose to dine in the ambiance of candlelit tables surrounded by Greek seaside frescoes, or during summer months, dine outside under covered umbrellas. Either way, this conveniently located mid-priced restaurant is a great choice for family dining or an evening between couples and friends. If you’ve only got time for take-out, they offer the full menu and prepare generous portions to go. If you’re looking for a quick lunch spot, weekdays 11:00-14:00, they serve a 98 kroner special: 2 souvlaki skewers, plus your choice of bulgur, rice or French fries and a beverage. For catering stop by or call 08-753 06 50 or email [email protected]. They speak English and their service is exceptional. As for my own experience with Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren catering, I was impressed with their level of care and concern for my event. The owner visited me ahead of time to discuss details and the night of the party arrived early to set up a grill where food was prepared fresh on site. They were professional and attentive. If you've always wanted to visit Greece, Grekiska Kolgrillsbaren is your chance for a quick trip to the Mediterranean. You’ll be glad you went. Check out their website for other locations in the Stockholm area. Guest post by Lana Wimmer. Open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, from 12:00-14:00, you can bring your own gear and go for a spin. Or if you’d prefer lessons, check the website for times. Lessons are offered in English to children on Thursdays at 17:00, groups starting at age 4 years and up. The kids are divided according to age and skill level, and not to worry, there are plenty of teachers on hand to help with beginners. Group practices are outdoors so dress warm! It’s important to note: helmets are a must and skaters need to bring their own skates. Skates are available to rent but you’ll need to make an appointment for a fitting. I found the best way to contact DASK is to email [email protected]. Do expect a few days wait time before they respond. They don’t have someone in the office everyday and it will take time for them to contact you. Or show up at the class and get the information directly from them, sometimes this is easier. For private lessons, you can email requesting a teacher or talk to them directly at the rink. Private lessons are scheduled during the open public skating time on weekends and prices depend on the individual teachers. Unfortunately, the rink closes on March 6th so if you want to skate you better race over before the ice melts! Guest post by Lana Wimmer.
