Part of our Rinkeby wood is being dug up during the summer holidays to make space for a new 'snow depot' - where the snow that is cleared from the roads in the winter is dealt with. The previous snow depot was on a piece of land that has been sold, somewhat controversially, to Good to Great Tennis Academy, who will build an elite tennis academy - Catella Arena - on the site (see our recent post about the arena here).
The 5000 square metre site (about the size of a football pitch) is not in the area of the woods that is a Nature Reserve. It is behind the recycling area off Edsbergsvägen where the car park for Danderyds Golfklubb is. Although the neighbourhood needs and wants the depot, people living around the site received no warning that it was coming and have criticised the council for not giving any notice. The nature association, Naturskyddsföreningen, was also not pleased that no environmental study was conducted first. The main concern for them is that when snow is dumped, oil from the road and bits of tarmac naturally come too and that would like to see what will happen to that when the snow melts. The site will open in the autumn (2016) and the kommun plans to evaluate the environmental impact before the first snow comes. After many, many years in the planning, work has finally started at one end of Mörby Centrum to transform it, eventually, into Danderyds Centrum. The work at Mörby plan - the end where the taxi rank and bus stops are - has started and from the 1st June, the taxis will be at Mörbyleden instead. The green arrow shows where they will be, the blue arrow will be the bike parking and the red area where they are about to start rebuilding (see the video below). Space for 550 bikes is due to be completed in December 2016 and then work on the new bus station will start. Here is a video showing the plans: Let us know what you think about it in the comments below or on Life in Danderyd's Facebook page
It is that time of year again - school choices for the year start in August. For those choosing within the Swedish system, the closing date is 11th February 2016 and choices need to made via www.danderyd24.se. We got to see around Stocksundskolan last week and were happily impressed. It is a big school - 750 children split between it and Långängsskolan but class sizes are relatively small and the facilities (staff and location) are really very good. All the schools in Danderyd report good results. It was absolutely worth going to the open evening though as it gave us a really good insight into both the schools and a much better understanding of the Swedish system, which is so very different from the British system! It is almost impossible to compare them as they focus on such different things and by meeting the teaching staff, it became much clearer how the balance between school teaching and 'fritids' teaching works. The remaining open days are:
British International School of Stockholm - Monday 1st Feb 9am-4pm (ages 3-14, both sites are open) Vasaskolan - Monday 1st Feb 6pm for reception (age 6) and 7pm for year 4 (age 10) Baldersskolan - Tuesday 2nd Feb 6pm-7pm Långängsskolan - Wednesday 3rd Feb 6pm-7pm Kyrkskolan - Thursday 4th Feb 6pm-7pm Brageskolan - Wednesday 10th Feb 6:30pm-8pm If you feel like sharing your thoughts on our local schools and/or choosing a school, drop us a message here or get in touch via Facebook.
If you've got rubbish you've been meaning to take to the dump, the commune's pick-up service just got a whole lot better. This spring, the routes are better and longer and there are more pick-ups. You can meet the lorries at specific points and dates around Danderyd (see schedule below) and get rid of:
- nasty chemicals, as long as they are well-packaged and labelled - broken electrical items, such as old computers, microwaves, batteries etc. - furniture, skis, paintings and plant pots - clean and whole clothing and toys for reuse (max one bag per household) What you can't give them are: - white goods (fridges, dishwashers etc.) - building or business waste - lawn mowers or mopeds - medicines or explosives - garden waste - anything that should be recycled, such as newspapers and packaging Important to note new rules this year: - don't take rubbish in bin bags, it must be possible to see what it is and dangerous items must be properly labelled - max 1 cubic metre of waste per route - all rubbish needs to be handed directly to the driver
